Working Cultures and Hours around the world infographic

Work around the globe

To state the obvious, work is an incredibly significant part of our lives. We put so much effort and time into our occupation, but what does it give back to us?

We compared the way Australia, the UK, Sweden, the US, Brazil, South Africa and Germany work, examining factors like minimum hourly wage and annual leave.

Out of the 7 countries, South Africa clocks in the most average weekly hours worked.

  • South Africa: 43.3
  • Brazil: 40.3
  • The US: 38.6
  • The UK: 36.5
  • Australia: 35.9
  • Sweden: 35.8
  • Germany: 34.5

2 out of the 7 have no set hourly minimum wage.

In Sweden, workers are legally allowed to form unions to bargain their wages collectively, and in South Africa, the minimum wage differ depending on what kind of work you do.

  • Australia: $17.29
  • The UK: (£6.70) $13.80
  • Germany (€8,50) $12.33

Australia and the UK are the only countries with flexible working laws.

In the UK you can request after 6.5 months.

In Australia, employees have the right to request flexible working
after at least 12 months.

Sweden has been making headlines recently as various companies
across the country are trialling a 6-hour work day.

  • Germany: 14 Weeks
  • South Africa: 17 Weeks
  • Australia: 18 Weeks (plus eligible dads and partners get 2 weeks)
  • Brazil: 24 Weeks
  • UK: 52 Weeks

What happens if you fall ill? How many paid sick days do you get?

  • The UK: no limit (as long as you provide a doctor’s note after 7 consecutive days)
  • Brazil: no limit (as long as you provide a doctor’s note after 7 consecutive days)
  • Sweden: no limit (as long as you provide a doctor’s note after 7 consecutive days)
  • South Africa: 30 days
  • Germany: 30 days
  • Australia: 10 days
  • The US: 8 days

Sweden wins as the country with the most holiday (including public holidays), and the US comes in dead last, where workers are legally entitled to no holiday (with 8 nationally-recognised holidays per year).

  • 36 Sweden
  • 35 Brazil
  • 30-33 Australia
  • 29-33 Germany
