UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) is a non-ministerial government department that provides advice and information to UK-based businesses to ensure their success in international markets through exports. UKTI encourages and supports overseas companies to look at the UK as the best place to set up or expand their business. The department is based in London but has professional advisers around the UK and staff across more than 100 countries.

A recent Citrix survey of UK small businesses conducted by YouGov shows that an increasing number are looking to expand into new markets. Six out of 10 said they anticipate doing business internationally, a 20 per cent increase on the number currently selling or sourcing products and services abroad. One of the top priorities of UKTI is to give more support to small and medium-sized businesses wishing to export. “In the past, this would have entailed the cost of sending someone to assess potential opportunities in a new market,” said Steven Tait, UKTI Trade Services. “Webinars are a much more effective way to support companies that are looking for trade opportunities overseas.”


The UKTI’s calendar of events offers hundreds of free webinars via Citrix GoToWebinar covering the relevant topics, sectors and countries around the world to create a successful export plan. These events allow participants to interact with experts. “We have found that 40 minute presentations work the best, with people able to ask questions at the end. We can speak to 100 people at one time, keep them engaged through polls and live chat and survey the ‘happiness effect’ at the end to evaluate the success of each event,” said Tait.

  • The integrated survey and chat capability have boosted user engagement. Surveys and statistics enable UKTI to find out what works best. The recording feature of GoToWebinar enables people who missed a webinar to watch it later.
  • UKTI has also started to explore Citrix GoToMeeting for internal meetings across different offices and remote working.
